Al Basha's Adventures (الباشا) is an Arabic hack of Super Mario Bros. released at an unknown date. Mario is altered to be dressed as a Pasha, most enemies and background elements have also been altered as well.

Overview[]

This hack is extremely obscure, and has only known to have appeared on a single 7-in-1 multicart that was bundled with "educational computer" Famiclones (featuring Tom and Jerry wearing graduate hats on the label).[1][2] Additionally, the game appears as a built-in game on a Famiclone manufactured by Ramar International, a company who focused almost exclusively on the Arabic market (possibly being behind the creation of the hack, though there is little amounts of proof to support this claim).[3] The game is labeled as just "MARIO" in both releases' game selection menus.

Trivia[]

Gameplay on a Famiclone without duty cycle swapping.[4]

  • Al Basha's Adventures features largely-unhacked PRG data compared to the original Super Mario Bros. ROM; however, its music is altered to play with swapped duty cycles (while sound effects are seemingly left intact). Presumably, this was done so that Famiclone consoles with swapped duty cycles would play the audio at the correct pitch.[5]
  • The hack appears to be based on the common "2" title hack of Super Mario Bros. (as seen on numerous multicarts), as evident by the castle graphic on the title screen.
