Come Back Toto is a single screen action game developed by SoftClub and released in the 1996. The game is actually a rather advanced hack of Snow Bros originally made by Toaplan in 1990. It features the same base gameplay as Snow Bros but it adds various things such as multiple weapons and new enemies as well as completely new music.
Overview[]
The game plays very similarly to Snow Bros. You play as a boxer (possibly named Toto?) As you defeat all the enemies on screen before going to the next round. You do this by throwing a sport themed item (e.g Boxing Gloves) at the enemy which turns them into a bomb. You then throw it across the screen at other enemies that die after getting in contact with it. If you take too long in a stage, a character, likely supposed to be a coach appears and eventually starts to spit out witches that ride on broomsticks at you.
All of the enemies in the game are now mostly sports themed. There is a cowboy, a basketball player, a football player that charges at you, a pitcher that throws baseballs at you, a batter that spins in a swirl-like manner, and a guy wearing a cape the flies to a side of the screen.
Multiple things can drop from a killed enemy, which include either bonus items that give you points, powerups that increase your speed/power/spread, a green face which turns you big and allows you to wipe out all enemies on screen, and sports balls which all act differently from each other. Billiard balls act like normal gloves but bigger, footballs curve either up or down depending on if you have the spread powerup, basketballs move in a squiggle-like fashion, golf balls which go straight, and soccer balls which act similarly to golf balls but faster, they are the rarest and most powerful weapon in the game.
After each 10 rounds, there is a boss fight bizarrely between a picture of a woman. Which acts similarly to the bosses from Snow Bros. Though the bomb enemies are instead replaced with what seems to be guys that pop out from the image and enter a sort of falling animation before disappearing. Interestingly, the first boss in the game acts identically to the second one but with a different sprite. The fourth boss is two people in cars which throw footballs at you which turn into water. The final boss is against two female cupids which throw flying cages at you. The top is also replaced by a giant bird's talons. Which kills you if you touch it.
After beating the final boss, you are treated to a glitched out version of the ending sequence from the original game with Puripuri and Puchipuchi removed as the silhouette of what seems to be a baby wearing boxing gloves appears before the text "GAME END: THANK YOU" appears.
Trivia[]
- Some of the sound effects seem to be corrupted/modified versions of the ones from the original game.
- This is SoftClub's only known game.
