Kamen Rider Ryuki: Survival Fight (Japanese: 仮面ライダー龍騎 サバイバルファイト) is a licensed plug and play game based on the tokusatsu television show Kamen Rider Ryuki released exclusively in Japan by Bandai in 2002. The game was developed for Mega Drive/Genesis clone hardware, with the game's base unit using the SM801-A1 system-on-a-chip clone known to have been used in regular Mega Drive and Genesis clone consoles.
Overview[]
The game is a basic one-on-one fighting game where the player, assuming the role of a Kamen Rider, fights against nine other Kamen Riders. Controls involve a wireless, motion-activated glove controller that resembles the Dragvisor from the Kamen Rider Ryuki show, which is bundled with the game and which the player wears on their hand. Ten Advent Cards are also bundled with the game, which are inserted into the Dragvisor during gameplay.
Gameplay[]
Character select.
Only one mode is offered in the entire game, which has the player select one of nine available Riders to play as and fight against the remaining eight as well as Kamen Rider Knight in his final form, Knight Survive, who is hidden until the other eight Riders are defeated. The game notably features detailed photorealistic backgrounds, full-motion video sequences, and large, elaborate sprites for the Riders and special effects, with the sprites of the former in-game being digitized recordings of actors in the Rider costumes.
Gameplay.
During battles, the player has to punch with the Dragvisor controller to deal damage to their opponent. Parry attacks can be performed by punching while in the middle of an opponent's attack, which then results in the game presenting a bar that can be filled up by repeatedly punching. If this bar is full, then the player can deal a more powerful attack. Otherwise, nothing happens. Opponents do not appear to be able to parry the player's attacks.
Sometimes, when the player loses a certain amount of health, the game then presents a flashing graphic of an Advent Card, which signals that the player has to insert one of the ten Advent Cards bundled with the game into their Dragvisor. This then presents one or more Contract Monsters that the player can summon in battle. Once a Contract Monster is summoned, then a full-motion video sequence featuring it will play and the opponent will lose a significant amount of health. Like with parry attacks, opponents do not have the ability to summon Contract Monsters themselves, and is an ability that only the player has.
Once a Rider is defeated, then the game will display a screen with the player's selected Rider in a victory animation before the English text "YOU WIN!" appears at the top of the screen. After the eight Riders and Knight Survive are defeated, then the game will show a screen with the English text "Congratulations!" at the bottom right and the player's selected Rider in their fighting stance. Losing a battle will result in the game playing a defeat animation of the player's selected Rider and the English text "YOU LOSE!" before going to a password screen. Exiting the game mid-battle will also bring up the password screen.
Outside of the main game mode, the game also has options to enter in a password, which allows a player's progress to be restored at the last battle they started, and a gallery where the player can play the individual full-motion video sequences for the Contract Monsters available in the game.
Development[]
While the developers of this game are currently unknown, it is confirmed that this game was developed using the TomSoft MegaDrive SDK, created by prolific Chinese game developer Tommy Xie of Dragon Co. fame and also used in the development of unlicensed Sega Mega Drive games connected to Dragon. This is evident by the header in the game's ROM containing text mentioning this SDK. While said text also claims that the SDK was only made for Dragon Co., whether they were the developers of this game remains unclear.
Trivia[]
- The game has been dumped in MAME as of version 0.277. As of writing, emulation of the game is preliminary, with only the basic controls (punching and navigation) working in MAME.
