Mario + Tanchiki is a compilation for the Genesis/Mega Drive released by Kudos and K&S sometime during the early to mid 2010s. It features stolen and pirated homebrew ports of Super Mario Bros. and Battle City respectively.
Overview[]
When you start the game, you are greeted with a simplistic menu featuring two options. Mario (Super Mario Bros.) and Tanchiki (Battle City). Both games are homebrew ports of their original NES/Famicom titles and now lack their copyright, though Battle City now credits Kudos instead of the original developer. Due to these both being close homebrew ports instead of in-house ports, they play almost identically to the original games that they are based on.
Mario (Super Mario Bros.)[]
The gameplay is the same as the original game as it is a direct port of 75% of the original game's source code. The only aspects of the game that are different from the Famicom original are the sound engine (i.e. all music and sound effects were adjusted to play natively on Mega Drive sound hardware) and the controls, which the B button is used for running and the A and C buttons are used for jumping. The ending is also the same as the original. The port was originally made by Mairtus under the name SMB4MD.
Tanchiki (Battle City)[]
Just like Super Mario Bros. the gameplay is the same as the original game. It is based on the original homebrew game, not the "Dune" version, which features better graphics, new levels, but a lack of sound effects. Unlike the first port, this one uses the original music and sound effects from the original Battle City. Which seem to be recorded off the original game. This one also seems to be made completely from scratch. You use both A and C to shoot from your tank. The port was originally made by Krikzz
Trivia[]
- The box uses a logo for a early prototype of New Super Mario Bros.
- Even though the game is technically a compilation, it was still commonly featured on the A series of multicarts.
