This article is about the bootleg port of Mortal Kombat 3 by Cony Soft. For the bootleg port of Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero for the Sega Mega Drive and SNES, see MK5 - Mortal Combat - Sub Zero.

Mortal Kombat 5 is, despite its name, a bootleg port of the fighting game Mortal Kombat 3 for the Famicom. The game was developed by Cony Soft, and possibly published by Hosenkan Electronics (as the game credits a "HOSEKN" on the title screen) in 1998. The game is infamous for its sausage-looking blood sprite.

Overview[]

The music was mostly reused from Yoko Soft's Mortal Kombat II, released in 1995. The "Bouns" typo was also carried over from it.

The game includes 8 characters with no repeats in the original version. They are Sindel, Liu Kang, Kano, Sonya, Sub-Zero, Stryker, Shang Tsung (who uses Nightwolf's headshot) and Kung Lao. Unlike the original, it's possible to perform a fatality in the first round. There is only one fatality in the game, which involves smashing the opponent into little balls. The ending is a simple Congratulations screen bordered by the franchise's logo.

The moveset is the same as Mortal Kombat II.

Hacks[]

  • Mortal Kombat Trilogy: Released in 1998. This is the most common version of the game. This version adds a Mortal Kombat Trilogy intro screen, a "HOSEKN" copyright notice to the title screen and duplicates the roster.

Trivia[]

  • The music appears to be taken from Tenchi wo Kurau 2: Sekiheki no Tatakai (aka Warriors of Fate in the US) and simplified. Liu Kang and Shang Tsung's stage is a cover of the Stage 1 theme, and Sonya uses a rendition of the Gaidu boss theme.
