Pocket Monsters Crystal (口袋小葉獸 水晶版), sometimes referred to as "Pokémon Chikorita" to distinguish it from the official Pokémon Crystal, is a Game Boy Color platformer developed by BBD and released by SKOB in the early 2000s. Besides its title, it has no relation with the official Pokémon Crystal, and is instead an originally developed unlicensed game.

Overview[]

The game is a platformer centered around the Pokémon franchise. The player takes control of Chikorita and needs to defeat other enemy Pokémon while traversing each stage. There is only a total of four levels before the game ends with a splash screen showing Chikorita.

Most notably, the game uses sprites of Chikorita that look identical to the ones in the SNES game Pokémon Gold Silver, albeit downgraded in color. It is unknown which game was released first, but a connection between the two games is likely.

Releases[]

At least four releases of this game are documented: the original Chinese release, named 口袋小葉獸 水晶版, an English release that uses the "Game Boy Advance" banner on its cart label, an additional "Gamf Boy Advancef" English release under the name Pokémon Fancy Elf, and an alternate Chinese "New Game Color" release with a different name that features Ash and Misty on the cart label. The alternate release has a different title screen compared to the original Chinese release, removing the graphics for the English name and "水晶版" text. It is unknown if the English releases are different compared to the known Chinese versions.

As of August 26, 2024, only the original Chinese release has been dumped online. This release is copy protected with a copy protection scheme used in Game Boy Color games developed by BBD, which along with aspects of the game matching their known Game Boy Color games make it extremely likely that they were behind the development of this game. The only emulator that emulates this game as of writing is hhugboy.
