The Samuri 60-in-1 (or simply Samuri) is a multi-game plug & play device released in 2006. The console's hardware was manufactured by Zechess and its software was developed by Hummer Technology, who are more well known by their previous name Hummer Team. The device uses the VT03 chipset, which is a single-chip Famiclone with extended graphical and audio capabilities developed by V.R. Technology in collaboration with Hummer Technology[1] - it would also be used for the ZDog, another plug & play device produced by Zechess and Hummer Technology and released in the same year as the Samuri, as well as other low-cost plug & play devices by various companies released throughout the 2000s. The device loosely resembles that of an original Xbox controller.

Overview[]

When powered on, the system displays a splash screen featuring Hummer Technology's horse mascot, officially named Simmer Pony, before booting to a built-in game menu named Star Angel, which features its own title screen. This game menu offers 60 minigames, which includes a Star Bank "minigame" that acts as a means to check progress. After completing each minigame, the player gets a star, which is stored in the Star Bank. The game is "completed" once the player gets all 60 stars by completing every game. While most of these minigames are original to the Samuri and utilize the VT03's extended features, a set of minigames are isolated versions of individual acts from The Hummer, a graphical hack of Hummer Team's infamous bootleg Sonic the Hedgehog port for the Famicom, Somari (The only changes the Samuri version features, however, is backgrounds and game graphics, and Dr. Robotnik being referred to as "Evil Ghost" in the manual).

Some of the games featured on the Samuri were later reused for ZDog, albeit with added digitized sounds (using the VT03's enhanced PCM capabilites).

Trivia[]

  • The manual seems to be based on an early version of the Samuri. There are several differences between the games in the manual and the games that actually released. For example, the manual has Mad Dogs instead of Crazy Cats.
  • The system's design is near identical to the "TV Joystick" plug & play systems released by Timetop.
  • The Hummer levels don't have Special Stage as its own dedicated stage, you can only play Special Stage if you get 50 rings in a level and complete it. Green Hill Zone Act 3, Labyrinth Zone Act 2 and Final Zone are all stages that are not available to play. Final Zone is featured in the manual for Hummer Final.
  • The victory music used for the games designed for the VT03's extended mode is a shortened version of the victory theme from Donkey Kong Country 4, which is a Famicom port of Donkey Kong Country made by Hummer Team.
  • The game selection menu music resembles the song D.I.S.C.O. by Ottawan.
  • An earlier version of the Samuri mispells the Star Bank as "Start Bank". This version also lacks a hidden version screen.
