Notice how the cartridge picture is based off of Super Mario Land.
Comparisons
Mario cannot jump on enemies, instead he has curl up in a ball, maybe like a spindash attack from Sonic, presumably.
I guess this is the sprite when they're in a ball.
Also, notice how Mario's head is not on the life bar, at the bottom.
