Before starting the game, the player is forced to choose one of three playable characters: Simba, Timon and Pumbaa. Simba is balanced overall, but has no projectiles and can swim for a limited amount of time (naturally, there's only one water section in the entire, which is not required to beat to complete the game). Timon has the slowest speed, but he can swim without an oxygen limit and uses tomatoes as weapon. Pumbaa is heavy to control and can't hold on the cliffs, but has the fastest speed which can be used to ram the enemies.

The Lion King III: Timon & Pumbaa is the first Dragon Co.'s game, which was done mainly as 'coding practice' for Tommy Xie. The game itself is not only based on The Lion King full-length cartoon, but also on an animated series spinoff, Lion King's Timon & Pumbaa. The game is most known for its ridiculously abysmal controls and unbelieveably bad physics.

Gameplay

Before starting the game, the player is forced to choose one of three playable characters: Simba, Timon and Pumbaa. Simba is balanced overall, but has no projectiles and can swim for a limited amount of time (naturally, there's only one water section in the entire, which is not required to beat to complete the game). Timon has the slowest speed, but he can swim without an oxygen limit and uses tomatoes as weapon. Pumbaa is heavy to control and can't hold on the cliffs, but has the fastest speed which can be used to ram the enemies.

The goal of each level is to find the boss (in case with stage 2, two bosses) and beat him in order to proceed to the next level. Such items as stars (extra points) and hearts (extra hitpoints) can be met on the way, as well as a lot of enemies like frogs, birds etc. The continue system is the same as in Somari: no more than nine lives is allowed to be held by the player; in case if a life is lost, the entire level has to be started from the very beginning; in case if all lives are lost, the game is over. Unlike Somari, though, the game gives a possibilty to get extra lives every 100,000 points.

Trivia

  • The ROM's name in GoodNES misspells the original title as Lion King III: Simon and Pumba.
  • The title screen hack, The Lion King IV, is undumped. However, the follow-up, The Lion King V: Timon & Pumbaa is a separate game and was dumped recently.
