The Tristar 64 is an unlicensed add-on for the Nintendo 64, produced in Hong Kong by Future Laboratory.

Overview

The Tristar 64 features three cartridge ports, each for NES, Famicom, and Super Nintendo/Super Famicom cartridges, through which it emulates the NES or SNES hardware. The Tristar 64 has a built-in cheat cartridge functionality through a program called the "X-Terminator", and has a Memory Editor for editing and archiving SRAM and EEPROM game data.

The Tristar 64 requires a separate power supply to run. It connects to a television via RCA composite output cables, with the Nintendo 64's own video output being routed through the Tristar device.

Even though the device boasts compatibility with the majority of NES and Super Nintendo, cartridges with an extra processor (such as the SA-1 chip on Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars) are not supported.[citation needed] The Tristar 64 is similar to the Super 8, an add-on for playing NES and Famicom cartridges on the Super Nintendo.
